Divali
Divali in Trinidad and Tobago is one of the country’s most vibrant and widely celebrated festivals, rooted in Hindu tradition and embraced by the multicultural society. Known as the “Festival of Lights,” it marks the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, commemorating the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya in the Ramayana epic.
In the weeks leading up to the celebration, homes, temples, and public spaces are cleaned, decorated, and prepared for pujas (prayer ceremonies). On Divali night, families, friends, and communities light hundreds or even thousands of small clay lamps called diyas, placing them in rows along pathways, windowsills, and gardens, creating a breathtaking golden glow.
The occasion is also marked by traditional Hindu prayers, storytelling, cultural performances, and the sharing of vegetarian feasts featuring delicacies such as roti, channa, kheer, and kurma. Beyond its religious significance, Divali in Trinidad and Tobago is a time of unity, with people of all faiths joining in to enjoy the lights, food, and atmosphere of peace and goodwill.
